Metal, Clay and Acrylic

In these final days of my residency, the classes are now concentrating mostly in clay sculpture and finishing the metal works. One of my designs with the two horses was cut by Rick and me and then assembled by several willing students. While finishing their works, other students had the opportunity to do a little extra work on special projects like painting and clay works. The back room of the art room is quickly filling with clay waiting to be fired and glazed. It is a great way to end the school year while trying to maintain enthusiasm and avoiding Senioritus!

Final Days at Laurel Highlands High School

Today Rick and I picked up all my welding and metal equipment at school. It is a bittersweet experience to know that tomorrow is my last day at the school. I won't miss the long drive or exceptionally early morning commute and yet there is not a single student who I will not miss. Having had the time in a 60 day residency to really get to know the students it has been so wonderful to watch their progress and encourage their artistic and personal growth. Many students are seniors heading off to college. Some of the under classmen will certainly be back in the art room vying for Mr. DeFazio's help and guidance. I look forward to another time to spend at Laurel Highlands.

Some of the students learned how to use both the mig welder and oxy-acetylene torch set. Some opted to paint their pieces with acrylic paints while others opted for the natural look of the steel with additions of copper.

Metal Works

Over the past month, the students at Laurel Highlands have been creating a number of personal projects made from steel and some copper. After successfully moving my welding equipment, torch set and various tools, we have set up shop outside the doors and under mostly blue skies.
